I have to say that this is one of the best movie-interpretation-of-book i've ever seen. it has a smooth pace and i thought that the scenery looked like something right out the book. i understand why some changes were made; tom bombadill bit was erased to allow it to fit into its time span and arwen (liv tyler) never really saved the hobbits but was made to, to even out the importance of female characters. i thought gandalf, pippin and boromir were excellent. they looked and acted exactly how i thought they would. yet, obviously since ive read the book there are some things i wish i could change. the lothlorien bit for example. in the book lothlorien was a refuge for the fellowship after the moria ordeal but it seemed darker in the movie. in the book, galadriel was kinder, beautiful in a sweet way, in fact gimli asked for a lock of her hair for a present, which he would 'cherish forever. in the movie she was dark, almost witch-like. that was one of the things that annoyed me. another was the fact that the legolas-and-gimli and the frodo-and-sam friendship was played down. in the book legolas and gimli become firm friends, comrades-of-war, in the movie legolas talks more to aragorn. it shows no dialogue between the two. also in the book sam seems to look upon frodo as a master, utterly devoting his life to him, but in the movie it seemed that the tie wasn't that strong. i can only hope that the two friendships are played upon more in the coming two parts. other than that though, it was fantastic. it kicked potters ass any day.
